Home and reality

We arrived safe and sound but to the reality of what didn't get done before we left plus the sheer chaos of five large suitcases, 5 carry on's being upacked ontop of our request to HIRE someone to clean being over rulled by a well meaning son...so it didn't get done. I've always wondered what the house would look like after not being cleaned for two plus weeks...and we have a NON shedding dog. I know several people even offered to help which makes me feel so appreciated and I'm sort of GLAD they didn't see the MESS! I can see where my son did clean the floors and mop but its the places in the corners and behind the couches where things seem to accumulate. I was ready to cry. One part really appreciates him monitoring the house, making trips back to do things and helping the kind person sitting the dogs...yet so upset he did NOT listen! We spent time last night a bit then ALL day till we passed out around 4pm from exhaustion. Now its after 9pm and Chase was "napping" with me and Braelyn decided to join us so I was sandwiched sleeping. Now, getting up to flip laundry, I'm getting a horrible migrane and my asthma is starting up from the dust. Funny how the air in China didn't bother me like this now is, not a good thing to realize. We've done over 9 load of laundry so far with the mountain range still standing for its turn. Aus decided that even the clean items we had laundered smell like "China" so back to be washed American. I got up around 8am today and was surprised to not feel too bad. I really wanted to go out for just an hour to Church feeling it was no different than all the trips they had us take in China...but my DH did not want to venture out. We also were a bit wary of the ice and snow...but the roads are clear. Just one more let down but the hubby has put up with so much I can't afford to upset him.

He's watching the Super Bowl now, all the kids are sleeping and until my vision clears I can't hardly type...tomorrow's another day. We are very grateful to the friends who brought over meals, special treats for the kids and all the kind support!

gratefully,

Home!!

We got home alive and well - and even managed an OK day - but the jet lag has been killer for all of us. Marie will post details I'm sure - but wanted all to know that we are well and everybody is OK!

hugs - aus

We're on the way!

02/06/2010; 05:45
As soon as the porter arrives we're on the way home! Thanks all - and hugs around

Time to go home!

Instead of touring a park today in the misty rain we decided to take on last trip back to the Island to complete some shopping for people who asked us to pick up things for them. I need one more suitcase almost for the extras but it was fun searching for the items on their list. With the ongoing rehab of the place its noisy, full of construction scaffolds, trucks, workers and dirt. Yet, its no worse than the chaos where we are staying in the midst of REAL busy day China.

The taxi ride is never simple, its more like a twisted ride at Kings Island with all the close calls, cars swerving at you, glimpses of parts of the car so close out of the corner of your eye you just try not to flinch. The taxi driver mumbles something when you enter and show him the name of the place written in several small lines and off you go. The meter clicks at times, some are listening to the TV channel or even have a screen to watch while driving. The seat belts rarely work and sometime you have to reach outside to let yourself out at the end. Tonight I had Chase almost asleep in the carrier with Braelyn asleep on my arm so I'm exiting at the hotel with two on my lap, trying to stand up when a tipsy group of young people are trying to pile in at the same time! The poor doorman did all he could to make way for this older woman and her entourage. By the time Aus could let himself out after paying I already had the stroller out of the trunk with the packages loaded ready to get clear of the hubbub!

Brianna spent several hours with another family who had their 6 yr old daughter along with her two older brothers for the adoption of their new 5 yr old sister. Last night on the bus together they were all having the grandest time telling jokes and laughing so hard she started snorting which set Chase off in hysterics too. I guess laughing runs in our family though, Brittany used to laugh each night at the dinner table so often the boys made it a game to see who could get her to hit the floor first. They'd say something and she'd start, then try not to let her drink out where its not polite then off the bench she'd go...so they'd each say "she's goin down now!" and we all knew. I felt sorry for our visitors who didn't understand her handicap. (two silly brothers or a mom who likes dry jokes). And, don't eat dinner with us unless you are ready for the unexpected. If you get up to the bathroom you are likely to come back to an empty table. I invite everyone to go hide then the unsuspecting guest has to realize to come look for us. Some never realize they must come search so we slowly sneak out of our spots so its safe for the next event. Aus likes to scare the poor person when he's found by yelling "BOO!" loudly. At our last house I hid in the same spot for ten years and the kids NEVER found me! Just wait until Chase gets in the mix...The kids who visit now get called to see something in our fish tank as a ploy only to get showered with 250 soft balls from up on the balcony. We make a game of it to scoup them back in the bin with us older parents using the snow shovel assigned to toy pick up.

We packed the suitcases and weighed them to see if we are at the 40# limit for China. Once we are in the States we can have 50# in each. Our tickets do have a an issue on the 12 hour leg...they have us in two different rows again. I finally got an answer back from our travel agent who said we have no choice. Other people have requested window or aisle seats! I'm NOT happy. If they will refund us the baby's seat I'll gladly ask for 4 seats together which they said they could do. All we can do is ask at the airport. I so worry about Chase letting us buckle him when he's not used to it. At breakfast its all I can do to get him to sit in the high chair even with me right there. I hoped by working with him a bit each day he's get used to it and I did try. He seems anxious that someone is going to take him away I guess. Eating breakfast isn't as relaxing now with the waitresses looking to come tease him. The language barrier keeps me from making them understand its NOT good to take his plate and pretend to take his food from him just to tease him, I think its mean! Or encourage him to smack at them even in fun. Then he wants to smack at Braelyn who's so used to her kind and gentle sister that it sets her off into an outburst of tears. She will have to get used to it but its not something I will tolerate. The lady this morning would just not let up. He'd crane his neck to see where she was then hide if she came close enough knowing she was going to tease him. Maybe its a culture difference but I intend to have a kind and gentle son, inspite of him being a boy! My recipe for the first two wasn't that bad so why change?

This evening we ran out to Justco to get one larger carry on to put Chase's things in or rather, the things for our daughter's friends who sent lists. Taking a cab was the same roller coaster ride mixed with King's Island's Scooby-Do where you get jolted around corners with lots of close calls. He dropped us on the opposite side of the street so we crossed at the light with about 100 people going over the 6 lanes with a couple medians. Braelyn soon fell asleep in the stroller and I held Chase's cup of milk under my chin so Aus could look at the cases. People were like bees swarming all through the place. We found what we wanted but you have to take the paper they write up to a cashier, then back to get the item, then they put stickers on it so people know you paid for it. Then we wanted to get a Chinese looking doll for the girls. Bad plan. We found three we liked to put away for future presents but as soon as I put them on the stroller to find something for Chase to play with on the plane this sales lady was trying to take them all away from Aus. He kept trying to say we were not finished shopping. She kept pointing to the cashier. It wasn't pretty. Finally he just went and checked out, came back then we checked out again so she would leave us alone!

So now the kids are bathed, the suitcases packed and weighed and we get up at 5am for our long journey home. Hearing about the snow and freezing rain in parts of the country where we have to change planes isn't encouraging but that's a day away....so we will see how it all works out. I'm proud of our son for holding things down at home, his friend Stina for housesitting the pets so our son could stay on campus since he's an RA, our daughter who had to help out with a lot of last minute glitches when our wired money was lost and soon, they all get to meet the new little guy who's their SIBLING!

Then, another big thanks to all of you who've read our blog, the good the bad and the ugly. I do hope we did not offend anyone. Writing so late at night when we are in a hurry we know we might say things that do not come out right. I did want to clarify one thing that didn't come out well. Thanks Val, you are right. When I mentioned adopting children who were not the "cute ones" what I meant was not about wanting a good looking child at all. So many people here keep telling us what beautiful children we have and it sort of bothers me since not all children are blessed the same. We wanted a child, our child. No matter what they looked like or their special need, we just wanted to be parents to the child we felt was ours. For us its not about looks but what is in the heart, then the joy does shine through!

Thanks for all the prayers, kind words and if you live close enough, do come visit!

Vaccination Waviers

Please post to all groups, to your blogs and anyone who can help! We cannot continue this risky torture of our children who have been through so much already! Our son had to get 6 shots, one right after another and it took over 7 minutes sitting there watching them draw up the next...

and they give ones that are optional in the US, we HAVE to pay cash on the spot while our insurance would pay if we were in the US, this is so wrong! PLEASE help us stop this barbaric torture!

We need as many people to do this as we can. Please
feel free to pass this on.

A day in 'real China'

A day in real China

With all the glamour of this ritzy hotel its easy to forget the people of this country who's children we are blessed to now call ours. After our 12 course breakfast and a quick change into romping clothes we met in the lobby at a very early 9am. For most people that isn't real early but to GET that far with three little ones you first have to get them to BED on time! RIGHT! I've gotten them spoiled rotten at bathtime. We fill the soaking tub with really warm water then turn on the rain shower head in the middle of the room to get it really steamy. Since they bring us a bottle of bath gel plus shampoo plus lotion plus one of condition and lastly, blue bath salts…we can't let them all go to waste! And with our suitcase only being allowed to weigh 44# there is a limit to what can be toted home. So this ever frugal mama lets them dump a whole bottle of bathgel in the tub while letting Chase dump the bathsalts all over the shower floor to keep him busy until the water is ready. It keeps him quite intrigued at the color and texture then all the bubbles catch his eye. He loves to pour from one container to the other so I kept the last three water bottles for him to use plus the dipping cup we use to rinse their hair. Of course I didn't stop there. With all three of them in the tub we made water bombs. Chase can now count to three then I drop a filled bottle of water at arms length between them to splash as high as it can. Aus could hear the giggles in the next room. I love how all three have such funny belly laughs. I guess I shouldn't be teaching my kids "bad things"!

So, it was late, real late by the time I got them ready for bed and to sleep. The girls crash quite well but Chase is still being a bit hypervigilant. He bounces around on the bed and I do my best not to tickle him or get him wound up but its just so darn hard. With the light down he will lay next to me if I ask him but he's back to wiggling around again. He is a real snuggle bug when he takes his bottle and I plan to keep him on one just a couple times a day for the special snuggle time but when he's using his cup we'll let him decide if he wants a snuggle or not. Braelyn was still wanting to snuggle when she took juice or milk right up until our trip but on the road she hasn't insisted. I've still offered and tried to hold her by herself then with Chase at times so she still gets her special time.

Getting up at 7am was ugly. None of the kids wanted to be up at that hour. Brianna is usually cheerful when she gets up but for her to want to go back to bed…we know we wore them out. We made the 9am meeting time to head to the Old Village tour and went in spite of it being the first rainy day. It was only a light drizzle, we took the umbrella from our closet and ponchos for insurance. Today we used the Greyhound type bus with a step up to the seats but some of the little ones miss that step. Its ugly let alone noisy when that happens. About 15 minutes of stop, start, swerve, don't look now but some van is coming our way in our lane against traffic then turning left on red across three lanes of traffic and we are there. No seatbelts, no car seats and no way to contain this very precious child you just traveled across the World to adopt. We got there just fine. Its not as depressing as the trip we took in Beijing two years ago to the WhuTong but close. The people were friendly and you can view the pictures but they do lead a simple life. Several locals would be walking along carrying a bag with fresh vegetables protruding and no where did we see anyone consuming junk food. I did hand out several pieces of wrapped candies to the children we came across and they dove for any that dropped to the floor which I hated to see.

A few of the doorways off the alley's we walked were decorated for being newly married or for the NEW YEAR with mean looking men in costume to scare away any bad spirits. One house was built of sea shells. Most did not mind their picture taken but one woman was hiding behind a book or something across the moat as the cameras were clicking. In a chair near the tiny grocery was a lady announcing she was over 100 years old!

With a trip back to the hotel to rest we went to the American Consulate for our swearing in Ceremony and were given a paper that will allow our guide to pick up our Visa for Chase tomorrow. Several of us hoped to get a bit more formula so we all took a stop at the near by Justco store. Most items are written in Chinese so it's a wonderful help to have our guides able to help us with our choice of purchases.

Eating pizza in our room for a simple dinner we bathed with bubbles and crashed with hopes of sleeping well. Tomorrow we pack, head over to Shaiman Island for the items friends have requested just hoping we are not over in weight. We should have sent something large for him but there is still time to get one more case if we need. I hear Aus's razor humming and Chase's breathing getting more regular so I'd better sign off before my fingers fall off.

Picture post 11

This is possibly the last picture post before we leave - I don't know what time there will be tomorrow. There were many requests for a better look at 'real China' - it's here - we took a walking tour through a village near here today. Have a look when it's good for  you - hugs - http://www.anaturalplace.com/chase/
